Informed Caring

Informed Caring is a portal to information resources for health care professionals.

This site is maintained by the Wisconsin AHEC Statewide Program Office to serve those working in local health departments, federally qualified community health centers, and others providing health services in rural and underserved communities in Wisconsin -- particularly those without access to academic or hospital libraries. The site was originally created by Northern Wisconsin AHEC through an NLM (National Library of Medicine) grant (# 1 G08 LM008280-01 A 1) They are grateful for the past participation of Bellin Hospital, the Bellin College of Nursing and Bay Area Medical Center as well as the Northeastern Regional Office of the Division of Public Health, the Nicolet Federated Library System and the Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center (NEWAHEC). Funding for enhancement to the site was provided through a Wisconsin Partnership Fund grant from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Outreach and further development is supported in part with federal funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract No. N01-LM-6-3503 with the University of Illinois at Chicago. Outreach to teaching sites is also supported in part through a contract with the National Health Service Corps (NHSC).

Wisconsin Area Health Education Center (AHEC)

AHEC is a health professions education and outreach program funded by federal and other grants and direct appropriation from the state legislature. It is part of a nationwide network of programs for improving accessibility and quality of primary health care. The national program was designed to encourage universities and educators to look beyond their institutions to partnerships that meet community health needs, working toward the goal of decentralizing health professions training and linking communities with academic health centers in partnerships to promote cooperative solutions to local health problems.

The Wisconsin AHEC System works to improve the supply, distribution and quality of health care professionals in Wisconsin. The system is comprised of seven regional Centers (located in Manitowoc, Milwaukee, Madison, Cashton, Wausau, Superior and Marinette), and a statewide program office located at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison.
